MinttuOlin viikon road tripillä Pohjois-Espanjassa, jonka aikana ajoimme vuoristojen halki Oviedoon yöpyen pienissä kylissä matkan varrella. Reissun ensimmäinen pysäkki oli Bilbao, jossa vietimme kaksi päivää. En ollut ennen käynyt Bilbaossa, mutta kaupunki vei sydämeni täysin, ja haluan ehdottomasti palata sinne hieman pidemmäksi aikaa. Vaikka kooltaan Bilbao on Helsinkiä pienempi, siellä on paljon nähtävää, johon kaksi päivää ei riitä. Keräsin muutaman matkavinkin Bilbaoon tulevien matkojen varalle.

Ätakontu
Kaupan erikoinen nimi ja coolit printti t-paidat ikkunassa kiinnittivät huomioni, joten suuntasimme sisään. Täältä ostin matkan ainoan tuliaisen itselleni (jos juustoa ja viinejä ei lasketa): mustan käsintehdyn pikkulaukun. Jos upeat printit ja luomupuuvillasta valmistetut unisex-vaatteet sekä paikallinen taideskene kiinnostaa, on Ätakontu ehdottomasti käynnin arvoinen. Mieheni löysi kaupasta itselleen hienon collegepaidan, joka on tosin eksynyt myös minun päälleni monta kertaa.

Arizona Vintage
Arizona Vintage yhdistelee trendikästä vintagea sekä uutuuksia. Valikoimassa on myös tuunattuja vintagevaatteita, asusteita ja kenkiä. Erityisesti kirkkaan väriset, tuunatut kimonot ansaitsevat maininnan. Valikoima on hyvin kuratoitu, joten täältä löytää helposti jotain uutta ja mielenkiintoista lisää vaatekaappiin.

Pura Brasa & KAI
Baskimaa on kuuluisa herkullisista pintxoista, joiden avulla paikalliset baarit kilpailevat suosiosta – baaritiskit notkuvat täynnä herkullisia suupaloja, joita saattaa vahingossa tilata liikaa.
Pintxot ovat vähän kuin tapaksia, ja ne tarjoillaan yleensä leipäpalan päällä. Pura Brasa ja Kai ovat vierekkäin samalla kadulla, ja hinnat ovat kohtuulliset.

Okapi
Tämän ravintolan löysimme paikallisen suosituksesta. Okapissa oli tarjolla edulliseen hintaan vegaanisia lounasvaihtoehtoja ja herkullisia jälkkäreitä. Lounas maksoi muistaakseni noin kuusi euroa, ja annos oli todella suuri. Kannatta mennä paikalle ajoissa, jotta saa istumapaikan – ravintola alkoi täyttyä heti klo 14 jälkeen, kun paikalliset aloittavat lounastaukonsa. Matkustellessa kannattaa usein kysyä paikallisilta suosituksia lounaspaikoista; ainakin Espanjassa ihmiset kyselevät kadulla keneltä tahansa vastaantulijalta suosituksia ravintoloista, vaikka suomalaisesta ajatus voi kuulostaa omituiselta.

I was on a road trip through Northern Spain heading towards Oviedo. During the trip we drove through some beautiful small towns and bigger cities in the mountains. The first stop of the trip was Bilbao, where we spent two lovely days. I had never been there before, but the city completely blew me away, and I definitely want to go back there for a longer period of time. Even though Bilbao is smaller than Helsinki, it has a lot to offer and two days are not enough to explore everything. I have gathered a few travel tips for the future – discovering the best sustainable places to see in Bilbao.

Ätakontu
The strange name and t-shirts with cool prints on them caught my eye, so we had to go in. Here I bought the only souvenir for myself (if you don’t count the wine and cheese): a handmade black leather handbag. If cool prints, unisex clothing made from organic cotton and the local art scene are your thing, you should definitely pay Ätakontu a visit. My husband found a cool sweather for himself, which has occasionally been stolen by me from his closet.

Arizona Vintage
Arizona Vintage combines trendy vintage with newer products. The selection includes altered vintage gems as well as accessories and shoes – especially the bright kimonos were really cool and deserve a special mention. The selection is well curated, so finding something new and interesting to your wardrobe doesn’t get easier than this.

Pura Brasa & KAI
Who would go the Basque Country and not try the famous Pintxos? Pintxos are kind of like tapas, but they are almost always served over a piece of bread with a cocktail stick. Pura Brasa and Kai are located right next to each other on the same street and they serve great pintxos. They are reasonably priced and very delicious – you might accidentally order way too much!

We found this restaurant thanks to a friendly local – often when traveling, we like to just talk to the locals and ask what they think is the best lunch place around. It’s not seen as too weird if you do this in Spain, however to a Finn the thought of asking a random stranger for lunch recommendations seems weird. We found Okapi to be a really nice lunch place, and they offered several vegan options for lunch. The lunch was very good and the price was around six euros, if I remember correctly – a pretty good quality/price ratio. You should arrive for lunch kind of early, because the place was getting crowded at 2 PM when the locals started their lunch break. Try the desserts, too!
